National Mangrove Biomass Survey

This is the first step in carrying out the 5 components of our project. In order to mark the international day for the conservation of the mangrove ecosystem in 2019, the project team will undergo a nationwide mangrove forest monitoring. This will give us an initial measure of the aboveground biomass potential of these forests in Nigeria.

Blue Carbon Demonstration Project

The demonstration will commence shortly after the completion of the biomass survey. The demonstration project will focus on increasing our knowledge of the carbon potential of mangrove forests and advice on sustainable means of resource management to the relevant stakeholders.

Mangrove Restoration Project

The Niger Delta hosts the largest span of mangrove forests in West Africa. However, oil pollution and local harvesting have resulted in numerous gaps in the forest continuum. Blue Carbon Project Nigeria plans to carry out two one hectare replanting and mangrove restoration in Akwa Ibom and Rivers State. This is also the first step in understanding the nutrient requirement of regenerating mangrove plants in different regions.
