Objective

The Blue Carbon Project Nigeria has the primary aim of bridging the gap between science and policies governing coastal vegetation. The primary focus will be to estimate the carbon sequestration potential of these forests. This will be achieved in the following ways:

  • Research in understanding the coastal environment

  • Environmental projects to estimate coastal forests potential to store carbon.

  • Community engagement on managing coastal forest resources.

  • Training students in monitoring coastal health.

  • Conducting EIA for coastal projects.

The Process

The Project will follow the likes of successful attempts in other regions by using emerging technologies in measuring and monitoring carbon in coastal vegetation. The project will also strive to add to the growing database on blue carbon opportunities in Africa.

Components

Emulating the progress and achievement of the Blue Carbon Project Abu Dhabi; the Blue Carbon Project Nigeria will be made up of five components which will be joined together for an effective project. They include:

  1. Data Collection & Analysis

  2. Ecosystem Services

  3. Spatial Tools for Monitoring

  4. Policy Alignment

  5. Finance Feasibility of Ecosystem Services
